JWs and Domestic Violence
by Amha·aret ini remember when i was in my early teens finding out about a jw brother who was hitting his jw wife.
her parents were also witnesses and were disgusted with his behaviour (and rightly so).
i was completely shocked at the time, thinking those kinds of things just didn't happen among a loving brotherhood.

How many JW's quietly know it is all bull....or...
by oompa inat least have major doubts and flat out do not agree on some fds teaching.
lately i have been very engaging with jw family and friends and every single one had at least one total disagreement with the fds (i told them i would not shun them for this apostacy, and to be careful who they express it to...lol).
common non-beliefs with fds....were:.

I was completely shocked at the time, thinking those kinds of things just didn't happen among a loving brotherhood. I've since heard of numerous other cases of it.
Why is this?
Is it the pressure that the org puts on brothers?
Is it the sisters feeling they have no where to go? And can't leave if its not so bad as to put their physical lives in danger?
Is it control? Embarrassment?Or is the occurance of domestic violence among JWs no better or worse than the world's average?
I've no answers to these questions but was wondering what other's thoughts are on it.

Vegetarianism Suggestions?
by exjdub inmy wife and i are having trouble getting past the way animals are treated for our food supply and also the unhealthy things that are introduced into our food supply.
we have also discussed the fact that if our meat, chicken, pork, and turkey was not packaged in little vacuum packed trays where we could exercise a large amount of cognitive dissonance, we would not be able to eat animals.
i was hoping someone would have some favorite suggestions for books and resources to begin the journey toward vegetarianism.

I like to consider myself an ethicial meat eater. Sounds like a paradox but this is what I mean. Wherever possible, I eat meat that has had a decent life. It has been able to graze free range, was raised locally (so no awful cramped long journeys) and was slaughtered humanely. I buy from a butcher who has his own slaughter house and thus packaging and transport are minimal (kinder to the environment).
Around here, a lot of resturants are sourcing their produce locally and use meat that I feel happy consuming. I'm sure if you look you might find something similar near you. Consumers are starting to demand it so that need will be filled by at least some eateries.
This website might be of interest to you - http://eatwild.com/
You could always eats veggie when on the road and find a source for meat that you feel happy with when you are at home. If you switch to eating as a veggie, do it right so that your health doesn't suffer. Its not just about cutting out veg, its about finding replacement protein sources and nutrients.

DF and shunning to end soon...jw numbers will triple
by oompa inrecently at the beach house with my df studly son...a carload of young jw's in service drove by and saw us...old friends of his/me...they turned around and stopped...hugs and all!...i loved them treating him so human.
most dubs now hate to shun...esp.
their own family and there is less and less of it...my own mom will not shun my son, but dad will...she just told me she has no prob treating my son as just her normal grandson because she believe no kids should be allowed to be baptised!....i love you mom!

They have already eased up on it slightly. About 20 years ago (or maybe a little more) dubs had to shun those who had been unbaptized publishers if they sinned or went away from it. So the current stand may be as good as its going to get.

But God told us we could eat meat!
LOL
Sorry, I'm no help to you. I enjoy a steak far too much to just eat veg.

ever ask a JW friend or relative to stop shunning you?
by MegaDude ini sure did.
and after years and years, they did finally stop.
it's great to have them back.

Amha·aret
Good for you mega!
I've not been outright shunned yet coz I'm only faded. Only a handful of my dub friends stay in touch with me though and that shows that they are true friends. Family is hugely important to me and I wouldn't take easily to them shunning me if I ever end up getting DF/DA (which I've no plans to do). I'd do everything in my power to stop that happening, for my own sake as well as my child's. Don't want him to not have his grandparents in his life.

Do you Save?
by LouBelle inand i don't mean in any biblical way.. i joined a savings group at work and we put money away every month & i can tell you now it's quite cool at the end of the year to get an envelope with a wad of money in it and it's all mine.
so i'm going to be saving even more next year.. then i have a personal savings that i put into whenever i have a little extra over and i use that during the year to perhaps pay off a bill or if it doesn't have to go towards that, buy myself a little something.. plus do you save or have insurance policies for when you're older.
i've got 3 that i've staggered out.

Amha·aret
Yep! I was taught that lesson of saving as a child - learned it the hard way, as I do with most things!
So now I save both short and long term, though I only started the long-term one since coming out of the dubs and realising I couldn't rely on a divinity for my financial future

Do Jehovah's Witnesses take responsibility for anything?
by BonaFide innow that i am opening my eyes more and more, i am starting to realize that jw's don't see the need to take responsibility for anything.. like in the wt for this week, if a jw marriage fails, they can say it was because they didnt pray enough, or preach together enough.. if an elder gives counsel about anything, then if it seems to work for the person, then he accepts the praise or says it came from jehovah.. but if things don't work out, then the elder will blame the person for not following the counsel right.
or he will tell them to wait on jehovah.. or if there is a wrong teaching, it is never really wrong, it is only the light getting brighter.. it doesnt really matter what happens in a persons life, it is never the fault of jw's or teachings or decisions.
they will say that jehovah is allowing this test, or that the person didnt follow the counsel, or that jehovah is doing things in a special way, or that we don't know yet why that happened, but we will.. for a person that has a comfortable life, and things going pretty well, and they never ask the elders for help, often they think that is jehovah's blessing.. but if something big goes wrong, and the elders give bad advice, or they punish someone and call it "help" and they mess up a persons life, it completely doesnt matter to them.

If the numbers of pubs/baptised/studies etc goes up, its Jehovah's blessing - if it goes down its Satan's persecution.
If you leave and you do badly, that's Jehovah drawing his spirit and blessing away from you. If you do well, then Satan is taking care of those who are his own. (Although apparently this satanic "blessing" is short-lived - though many on here would disagree!)
They have an answer for everything as anything, good or bad, can be made to fit on the jehovah/satan blessing/persecution continuem.
